A Reflection of My Year

WOW! I have completed 11 years of teaching! I can still remember my first position, starting out! Now look at me. This year has been so amazing! God placed opportunities and opened many doors for me this year and to him I owe all the honor and praise. Teaching is my passion and heart and this year I was able to show others just that.

Now that the summer is here, it is time to begin planning for another amazing year...classroom theme, Math activities and projects, and of course more integration of technology. Next school term, I will be fully embracing the Flipped Classroom model!

I am excited to attend ISTE in a few days and all my planned workshops is on the Flipped Classroom. I have already started collecting ideas, resources, and formats for my students to share in this journey with me.

I hope you visit to be a part of our journey as well!

The Talking QR Code

QR Codes have made an impact on education as a great digital tool to engage students in learning. They are great to use as scavenger hunts, quick tips, resources, notes, and examples.

Did you know that you can create QR Codes that talk?

Recently, I read about using QR Voice to create talking QR Codes. Immediately I had to try it out. I spent a few minutes brainstorming ways to integerate this into an activity or lesson. The possbilities are endless. Teachers can use QR Voice for directions, vocabulary, scavenger hunt, and tips.

Next week, my students will be working on translating word problems into equations and solving them. PERFECT for QR Voice Codes. I found 15 word problems to record for the QR Voice Code Sheet. To create my codes, I use QR Voice. It is simple to create. Just type in what you want the code to say, click the QR Code icon, and you are done.

On the 8th Day....Fun Review Games for Finals

After Christmas break students will return to school for 8 days of review prior to taking their End of Course Exams. Giving my students packets with hundreds of problems, but that would only lead to them giving up, sleeping, and not even trying. So below of 8 fun activities I created to motivate and engage my students in their final exam reviews.

1. Vocabulary Gallery Walk - Each student will be given a word to define and provide an example for. Students will use Sock Puppet or Go Animate to create a mini skit to define and example their word. Students will lay iPads around the room and walk around to review each skit. Sticky notes will be placed near iPads for students to leave comments. Students will be instructed to write definitions and examples as they view each skit on their Vocabulary Gallery Walk Recording Sheet.

2. Word Problems Movie Premiere  - Students will placed in groups and will be given a word problem to create a movie. Each group will write and record a movie that tells their problem and the process they took to solve it. iMovie Instructions and Rubric To have fun, host a Movie Premiere, with popcorn, candy, drinks, and a red carpet.

3. BINGO - I love using Bingo Baker to create a BINGO game students can use on their iPads. Creating one is easy and students love using their iPads to play. Use it vocabulary, specific content review, or overall review. Here's a list of directions to create you on.

4. QR Codes Scavenger Hunt - Create QR Codes with word problems and other review problems to post in the classroom and the school. Give students the problem in the code to scan and put answer on another sheet with the answer. Example of a QR Code Scavenger Hunt for Equations.

5. Think- Pair-Share - Students will complete a series of problems that first require them to think about the process to solve the problem (gather their ideas), then students will get with a partner and work out the problem. Partners will share their problem and process of solving the problem using an interactvie whiteboard app such as Doddle Buddy.

6. Speed Dating - Using the Released Test from our state, each student will receive one problem to solve and explain. Students will use ScreenChomp or SonicPic to create a presentation that tells their problem and explains how to solve. Students will be required to show their work and record the steps they took to solve it. Speed Dating Directions.

7. Final Exam Think-Tac-Toc - Discussed in a earlier blog and article, this is a great way for differentiated instructions. Students are allowed to choose 3 activities to help in thier review. I incorporated technology tools in my version called Final Exam Think-Tech-Toe.

8. Flashcards Review - Create flashcards using StudyBlue. Share your cards with students. Have study them using study and test mode. I created a set for my students. If you teach Integrated Math 1, you are more than welcomed to use the Integrated Math 1 Vocabulary Review Cards.

These are 8 fun review games that is sure to get students motivated to review for their final exams!

QR Code fun....

With QR Codes</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/fitvids">F.i.T.</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

Yesterday in class students participated in a QR Code Scavenger to review Systems of Equations. It was very easy to create and very fun to particpate in. The students enjoyed it so much, they wanted to do more when all the clues were found.

To create I first created a map of our school Scavenger Hunt Map. Then I created the clue cards
Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards using a QR Code Maker. You may have to create it to fit your school. Students scanned the clue cards, got an answer and then graphed the answers on the map. The point on the map told them where to go for their next clue.

Last night I began working on a few things for class. This year I want my students to learn math formulas. Since we will have a set of iPads this year, what better way to create a QR Code matching activity.

These are so simple to create...
1. Go to www.qrstuff.com ~ a free site to create codes using many formats. For this I chose the text format.

2. For each code I typed in one of the formulas.

3. Click download and copy and paste your code into your document.

QR Codes

Quick Response are so fun to integrate in classroom. Quick Reponse codes are bar codes with information. QR Codes can include contact information, websites, text, SMS, pictures and so much more. I just started using QR codes in my Math classroom and the students really enjoy it. I have included a few ideas on how to integerate them into your classroom, along with other websites that gives ideas as well.

1. Worksheets ~ Create a 3 - In - A Row worksheets for students to play with another student.
2. Scavenger Hunts ~ Post codes around the school have student solve problems and find the correct answers.
3. Contact Information for Parents and Students ~ Post in classroom for students and parents to obtain phone number, email address, class website, etc.
4. Notes ~ Such an easy way to post notes and great for students to always have access to them at all times.
5. Assignments ~ Post Homework assignments in codes for students to scan before leaving class.
6. Hints/Tutorials to assist on problems ~ Use when students are solving problems. They can scan the code when they are having trouble or need help.

This is my favorite because it gives a lot of ideas: Education QR Codes Wiki

To create codes you can use: QR Stuff

Students love to use their cell phones to solve math problems.

You can create several problems on one worksheet, cut them and play Pass It. Each student/group solves a problem and them pass it to the next student/group.

The Scavenger Hunt is always fun for students.

For a Math Project, I included directions, website, and resources in one link!

Quick Response Codes are so easy to create. I have found that http://www.qrstuff.com/ is the easiest site to use to create codes...3 steps and you are done. Download your code and insert it into any document or presentation. The best thing is that it is free to create.

Students must have a smart phone to access codes. There are free QR scanners and/or Bar Code scanners for them to download to their phones. In my class, my students have Cell Buddies (groups of 2-3 students who share cell phones).

Try it...your kids will love it!
