The Digital Learning Log

This year I had the great opportunity to get a class of set of iPads. I spent the first semester finding different ways for students to save their projects, ideas, and notes. Evernote has been my favorite for saving files and notes, but it was a little difficult to manage all my students evernote account.





This semester, although only in Week 2, I have been using Kid Blog as a digital learning log. Kid Blog is an safe online classroom blogging site. Teachers have full control over all posts and comments. It is simple and fun!



We have completed two ( 2 ) assignments on the site so far, and it has been great. Kid Blog has provided my students with the  opportunity to create a digital learning log to share, save, and track their educational experiences while in my class. From journalling to sharing projects, Kid Blog is easy to create, use, and manage.

And yes....there is an APP for that! KidBlog has an App for students to use on thier iPad and iPhone.

I am so honored and blessed to be a part of this educational world. I love discovering and creating new ways to bring math alive in my classroom. My energy and passion for education allows my students to experience mathematics in a creative and innovative way. This new series is a collection of fun strategies, activities, and projects that will help motivate and inspire students to learn math.

Series 1 of our F.I.T. Exercises is our P.L.A.N.K.S. P.L.A.N.K.S. stand for Projects Linking Academics and Navigating Knowledge and Skills. Providing students with projects is a great opportunity to link what they have learn (academics) and navigate how well they can apply that knowledge with their skills to create a final product.

Each of the 9 projects in this series can be adapted to any grade, skill level, and topic. Directions and rubrics are provided for each P.L.A.N.K.S.

Video Blogging

 

A video blog is also known as a video log (v-log). It is created by embedding a video, video link, and supporting text and images.

Students can create a v-log to show their understanding of vocabulary words, steps/procedures, historical events, chapter reviews and more.

Steps:
1. Determine the objective or your goal.
2. Assign a topic to each student or group.
3. Have students create a storyboard to help them record their video.
4. Record using any video recording and video editing software. We often use iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.
5. If you have a class blog, embed your students video on the blog. Web hosting sites such as Teacher Tube, School Tube, or Vimeo are also great.
6. Have students view their classmates v-log and post comments.

Tips:
Use a rubric to assist in grading.

Digital Journals and Blogging

 I am so excited to incorporate writing in my math class during the new semester. My goal is to have students use blogging as an instructional tool to write and express their mathematical ideas. I hope to provide them with an opportunity to reflect on their understanding of mathematics.

Blogging and technology are 2 tools that go hand-hand. Blogging makes integrating technology in the classroom easy. I researched and wanted to find the easiest blogging site for me to use with my students. I found, Kid Blogs. Kids Blogs provided me with the opportunity to create one room and add each student to the room. To easily access student’s account as needed, I created the username and password for each student. There was no downloads or checking your email to activate the account. It was a perfect solution for my goal.

Now that I had the site, I needed to decide how I would effectively use blogging in my class. Blogs can be used as a classroom blog where I post assignments, classroom updates, and more. I could also use blogs as digital journals, exit slips, or a digital portfolio. Since my goal was to integrate writing to express mathematical ideas, I decided to use our blog as a digital journal.

Students will be required to write a blog entry on topics, questions, and problems assigned by me. They will be required to share their understanding of a topic, provide a response to a question, or solution to a problem. To allow students to reflect on their understanding and learning, topics, questions, and problems will be assigned to each student at the end of each class. Students will post their blog entry at the beginning of the next class meeting. To reflect on their peers understanding and learning, each student will be required to effectively respond to at least 2 of their peer posts.

Since blogs are stamped with the date and time, I can easily assess students understanding and provide feedback. Using blogging as a digital journal, students will be able to reflect on their overall progress in the understanding and communicating of mathematics. Student’s use of blogging will provide them with the opportunity to improve their writing and reading comprehension skills.  Most importantly blogging will allow me to promote a positive engaging learning environment for my students.

My students have already experienced microblogging through Twitter and Today's Meet, so this should be a great experience for them. We will still microblog for our warm-ups, exit slips, and collaboration.
