On the Twelfth of Christmas ...12 Digital Exit Slips

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas F.i.T. gave me 12 Digital Exit Slip Tools to use...

This year our district implemented the use of exit slips to assess student daily learning. So, what are exit slips...

Exit Slips are used to help students reflect on their learning and express their ideas and learning about a topic. The Exit Slip strategy also provides the teacher with the opportunity to integrate writing into the classroom.

Exit Slips can serve as 2 purpose: (1) It can be used to document student's understanding of a lesson, (2) as an informal assessment, and (3) the effectiveness of the teacher's instruction.  The strategy allows both the teacher and student to reflect on their daily experiences in class.

At first, I was not excited about doing one more thing in my class. After doing a few, I realized how useful Exit Slips were to the overall success of my students.

The Exit Slip strategy works extremely well with integrating digital tools in your classroom. You could allow students to write on their own paper or even print-out cute exit slips from online sites. But with so much other tasks we have to do, web-based tools and apps, makes Exit Slips can easy  implemented and analyze.

  • Prompts that document learning,
    • Ex. Write one thing you learned today.
    • Ex. Discuss how today's lesson could be used in the real world.

  • Prompts that emphasize the process of learning,
    • Ex. I didn't understand…
    • Ex. Write one question you have about today's lesson.

  • Prompts to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction
    • Ex. Did you enjoy working in small groups today?
Other exit prompts include:
  • I would like to learn more about…
  • Please explain more about…
  • The most important thing I learned today is…
  • The thing that surprised me the most today was…
  • I wish…

7 Innovative Assessment Tools

Sometimes math can be a bit challenging for some students. Math is that subject with no grey areas, either your response is correct or not. With the opportunity to have 1:1 iPads in my classroom, it provided with a chance to create innovative assessments to engage my students in learning.

The integration of technology has motivated my students to not only learn, but participate in learning. For the first time, I see students being engaged in everything from note taking to assessments. Yes, assessments. Digital learning tools have taken the place of the traditional paper and pencil math test. For my students digital learning tools has given them the opportunity to be successful.

Mobile devices such as iPads, iPods, and mobile phones allow students to engage in assessments that are fun and engaging.

The followingis a list of digital tools you can use in your classroom. All are free, engaging and promote academic success.

1.   Nearpod is an app similar to PowerPoint or Keynote. One major difference, you can integrate surveys and quizzes. It is a multi-media app that lets teachers create presentations that includes text, images, videos, assessment, and a drawing tool.

10 Ways to Integrate Technology with One Computer

“Can I integrate technology with only one technology device?” is a question many educators ask. You will be amazed at how much technology you can integrate with one device available in your classroom.
When I started on my integration of technology, I only had my classroom’s desktop and my cell phone. I was in a high school, so most of my students had mobile devices. But what happens in classrooms where students are younger with no mobile devices?

Quick Tips

Below I have listed ways you can integrate technology in both situations:
1. Google Docs / Drive is a great way to integrate technology as a classroom management tool.. Google Docs is a great way to store, assess, and create organizational tools for classroom management.
2. Use the computer as a presentation tool. PowerPoint, Keynote, or Prezi let you create presentations to use in your classroom to engage students. If you have a single iPad, invest in a mirror image app such as AirDisplay or use a dongle to display the presentation through a projector.
3. Learning Stations or Learning Centers – Create one center that students can use together in order to accomplish particular tasks or assignments. For example, use a single learning station for some project-based learning assignments or group work.

Using Google Docs for Notebook Checks

Google docs can be a great asset to your classroom. From notebook checks to surveys and assessments. With my iPad this form allows me to quickly walk around and check student's notebooks. It puts everything into an easy to view spreadsheet for viewing.
